This special issue of IraqCopy includes a photo report by photojournalist Susan Shulman during her visit to Iraq in the summer of last year.
The report "Climate Change and Health Security in Iraq," published in the journal of the Royal United Services Institute, examines the effects of climate change on the country's hospitals and schools and the implications for human security.
Shulman monitored the reality of Iraq's health institutions, which are overcrowded with patients, whose numbers have doubled as a result of the waves of displacement caused by climate extremism in southern and central Iraq.
The report also highlights the inability of health institutions and their staff to cope with these burdens in the absence and scarcity of financial allocations, whether in Baghdad or in city centers. In addition, Shulman documented the infrastructure issues in Iraqi schools and how the lack of basic services such as electricity exacerbates these issues and their effects on the level of students and their overall health and psychological status.
